Getting to Know Chervin Furniture & Design – One Employee at a Time

Meet Carter, he delivers your dream furniture!

There is a lot going on in our showroom these days, and it takes a team of dedicated, helpful individuals to make sure everything flows smoothly for everyone visiting us. But behind-the-scenes, supporting the sales people, are our friendly, hardworking delivery staff, making it possible for our customers to truly see their vision come to life in their home!

Today we want to introduce you to Carter, a key member of our delivery team. Carter has been working at Chervin Furniture & Design for just under 2 years, and you can recognize him by his friendly smile and willing nature. Carter started at Chervin back around the same time as his dad, Jody, took on his role in sales at the brand-new Chervin furniture showroom- and they are both truly valuable to the rest of the Chervin team. Carter loves being on the team – “everybody’s awesome – super nice and flexible; we really understand each other.”

Carter’s role requires him to drive all over Waterloo Region (often with 1 other colleague) to deliver sofas, chairs, tables, and various decor items to eagerly waiting customers. He has, on occasion, driven as far as 3 or 4 hours to deliver furniture to those individuals who value the Chervin brand, but live out of town. Carter has a great attitude about his work – he is a huge fan of his team, and enjoys when a colleague can join him on deliveries. Fall tends to be the season that picks up the most dramatically for him, but he is always at the ready to provide both muscle and ingenuity – some of these deliveries require a creative touch!

For example, Carter recalls one recent delivery in which the customer went from highly anxious to jumping for joy, after Carter and his teammate, Jeremy, managed to fit a very large sofa through a very small and awkward entryway and into the main living area of the home. The purchaser was very concerned the furniture wouldn’t fit through the door and around the corner but, with a lot of clever maneuvering, and the removal (and later, re-installation) of the legs, Carter and Jeremy situated the sofa exactly where it was desired, and were rewarded with an enthusiastic display of gratitude!

Being out on deliveries for the majority of his shifts, means Carter has a unique perspective on what products are popular. Recently, he says he is seeing a lot of Palliser sofas, particularly the Riley, being purchased. When asked what his own showroom favourite is currently, he shared that he has (and is very happy with) an Ilana mattress, and would love to own a lift top coffee table sometime in the future. The lift tables are perfect for laptop users or others who like a surface to work on at home, but one that isn’t conspicuous and doubles as living room furniture. The added bonus is the storage space available in many such units. Carter did jokingly note that, when making deliveries, his favourite furniture quickly becomes the light items like lamps and end tables!

In his spare time, Carter loves reading books on ancient history (for example, the Mongol Empire, the Roman Empire, and Ancient Greece). He also enjoys learning more about World War I, and has listened to a LOT of podcasts on general history over the years. It was actually podcasts that led him to his favourite (and most intense) hobby…Jody, his dad, recommended a podcast called “Chat with Traders,” a show that interviews experts on the stock market. Carter is now in his fourth year of self-taught investment strategy, taking time every day to study the current status of the stock market and anticipate and respond accordingly.

Working at Chervin has really had an impact on Carter. In addition to the great connections and friendships he has developed over the last 2 years, he also says the role has “ruined [him] for bad furniture!” Despite the cost effectiveness of some low-end brands, Carter says being surrounded by beautiful, durable, well-designed furniture for years means he’ll likely be buying nice furniture, if not much of it, when he moves into his own home someday. He will also be seeking out a home with wide doorways and hallways – no one knows the value of spacious passageways like a furniture delivery guy!

But of course, he’s always up to the challenge…want to meet Carter yourself? Come on in and visit the showroom in Elmira, or call in your order and he just may be the one to show up at your door with a special delivery of Chervin furniture!
