Choosing the Right Sized Area Rug for Your Space

Do you find it difficult to know what size of rug is appropriate for your space and furniture? If yes, you are not alone! Choosing the right sized rug can be tricky. We are here to help guide you to the best decision for your space.

Rugs in the Living Room

The most common size of area rugs are 5’ x 8’, 8’ x 11’, and 9’ x 12’.

For the average living room, a 5’ x 8’ rug is typically used. The rug should be placed in the middle of the seating area with furniture arranged around it – leaving a small gap between the rug and the edge of the furniture.

If you prefer your furniture to be placed on the rug, an 8’ x 11’ is for you. A larger rug like this will help pull the room together as the furniture and the area rug become one, creating a more cozy space.

To give the illusion of a larger space, there should be approximately 20 inches of bare floor on each side of your area rug.

Rugs in the Bedroom

In a bedroom setting, the size of rug you choose will depend on the size of your bed. A general rule of thumb is that the rug should always be wider than the frame of your bed. Keep in mind, there should be enough space to take at least one step on the rug when getting out of bed.

Single/Double Bed:

Typically, an 8’ x 10’ area rug is an appropriate size for a single or double bed. One way to place the rug is to put it under the end legs of your bed in a horizontal position, so that approximately one quarter of your bed is on the rug.

Queen/King Bed:

An 8’ x 11’ area rug is a suitable size for a queen- or king-sized bed. In this case, you will want approximately two-thirds of your bed to be on the rug.

Rugs in the Dining Room

When placing a rug under your dining room table, you want to make sure it is large enough to house all four legs of each chair while someone is sitting in it. Nobody likes the imbalanced feeling of having two legs on a higher surface than the others. To avoid this, it is best practice to have roughly 25 inches of space between the edge of the table and the edge of the rug.

A table that seats 2 – 4 people will likely be well suited for a 5’ x 8’ area rug. A table that seats 6 – 8 people will need at least an 8’ x 11’ area rug. It is always best to take measurements of your space and table before going rug shopping to ensure you make the right purchase.

Practical Tip:

If measurements are not your thing and you need a visual, grab some painter’s tape and tape out the size of rug you feel would be best, then measure the lengths of your tape!
