What is the purpose of your office?

Let’s start with the basics. Depending on what you do for work, the design of your office, and the elements you have, should reflect your occupation. If you work with clients that come in and out of your office, you will need accent chairs for them to sit and feel at their most comfortable when working with you. If you sit at your computer all day and only communicate with your team virtually, you wouldn’t need two accent chairs sitting on the opposite side of your desk. Knowing what you need for your job gives you a better understanding of how to design your office.

Where will your desk be?

The location of your desk is all dependent on your work style and your personality. If you have office windows and natural sunlight coming through, and you find them to be calming and a breath of fresh air, then place your desk by the window. On the other hand, if you procrastinate while working and can get easily distracted by what’s around you, then placing the desk near the window would not be a good idea.

Tip: Sheer curtains allow light to come through your office and keep you from seeing what is happening outside. Keeping you focused on work and not distracted.

What type of desk do you need?

Choose a desk that fits your work lifestyle! If you like to write notes or jot down reminders on paper, having a designated spot for your computer and an extended desk that wraps around gives you space to write at one end of your desk and type at the other. A larger and longer desk like this also has room to keep your files organized and other books and materials neatly in order. A desk that allows you the option to sit or stand throughout your workday can increase your productivity and is healthier on your body.

Don’t forget about your office chair! Having a chair on wheels can help you maneuver around your desk easily or having a comfy stationary chair can put you at ease and help you focus. Whichever chair you decide, placing a plastic mat or area rug underneath will keep the chair in its place.

Time to Decorate!

Now that we have the fundamentals, it is time to decorate your office. Decorating your office can include wall art, area rugs, décor, and more. Items that make your office feel cozy, comfortable, calm, and reflect your personality will have you feeling motivated to get your work done.

aVOID DOING THE FOLLOWING:

  • Try not to work in your bedroom; you want to keep your work life separate from where you tend to relax most.
  • Away from personal life; you want to keep it out of sight and away from family. Although you love your family, they can be distracting while you try to get work done.
  • Have your work everywhere; designate a space to work. You can leave work in its place and feel like you can get back to having that work-life balance.
