When you visit our newly renovated, 17,000 sq. ft. showroom in the heart of Elmira, you’ll be greeted with a smile by one of our friendly and helpful staff members, like Jody.
A versatile employee, Jody is happy to do whatever needs to be done. Whether he’s on the floor helping you find that special item, assembling furniture in receiving, changing a display, or cleaning the showroom, it’s the variety that keeps him motivated. Hired on opening day, Jody started three weeks later and he says the last year-and-a-half has flown by.
For Jody, the best part of his job is when he gets to communicate with customers. He believes that being a good listener is key to these successful interactions. Sometimes people come in and know what they’re looking for. If so, Jody helps them find it. Other times, they don’t know exactly what they want and come in for inspiration. That’s when he asks questions to help determine their likes and dislikes and pinpoint their style. With this information, he can accompany them to the appropriate furniture displays in the showroom. If what they want isn’t in the showroom, he investigates with suppliers to try to find it.
Along with customer interactions, Jody enjoys the team spirit. He and his co-workers help each other out all the time, whether it’s pricing information, getting a designer’s opinion, or locating a piece of furniture on the floor or with a supplier. The teamwork approach makes everyone feel appreciated and creates an enjoyable workplace atmosphere. At Chervin Furniture & Design, it’s all about helping each other to meet and surpass customers’ needs.
One item of furniture Jody loves to brag about his ZG5 Zero Gravity recliner chair from Palliser. This isn’t a sales pitch for Jody; he bought one after test-driving it in the showroom. He finds it not only extremely comfortable, but it offers a reprieve from his chronic back pain by putting him in a zero-gravity position, thereby taking the pressure off his lower back and offering support elsewhere.
On a personal level, Jody likes spending as much time as he can with family and friends – and watching the Toronto Argonauts (preferably with family and friends). His son helps out at Chervin Furniture & Design doing deliveries.
Jody lives in a large 120-year-old house in Elmira, with a big yard. Considering the age of the house, he does a lot of renovations. He wouldn’t exactly call that a hobby though; hobbies are supposed to be enjoyable and renovating his old house is more of a necessity. When asked if it’s his dream home, Jody said no. His dream home would have all renovations and housework done. He does love living in Elmira and in his neighbourhood, so he’ll just continue renovating as long as it takes.
